I ran into a problem recently that our residents need to be aware of…

Recently my Air Conditioner quit working, I called Staton HVAC (the people that installed our systems) It took them two days to show up, at an over $200+ service call charge. It was determined that my blower motor in the air handler went bad. I asked if it was under warranty. They said they couldn’t check until Monday (a normal business day) as they had to check with Trane on Warranty Status.

Unfortunately, it was not covered!  Trane offers a 1-year warranty by default, if a new unit is registered by the homeowner it extends to 5 years. My unit was never registered. Normally a new homeowner has 90 days to register their equipment with Trane and if done extends the warranty. Unfortunately, I bought a model home and the HVAC company, nor the builder registered the device leaving me with a 1-year warrantee from the date of installation. Registration is NOT automatic. If done it not only extends the warrantee but also allows a warrantee to be transferred for a small fee to a new owner should there be any warranty remaining if you sell your home.

This resulted in me being told they could fix it for $1350.00, this was in addition to the $200+ I already paid.  I decided to pass and check around. A friend of mine a retired HVAC technician advised me that was way out of line. I got it fixed for $700.

Please be aware that if “You” did not register you HVAC you are out of warrantee as all our homes are over 1 year old. You can check your warrantee status with Trane by calling them and providing the serial numbers.

You may also want to think twice about using Staton HVAC, they appear to be way overpriced.
